COMMENTS:
This watercolor is this artist's way to "sing" about seasons of life. Last summer I was intrigued again by the stages of growth for the sunflower heads. The early blooms come on very tall, stately stalks. As the seeds develop the heads bow over with the weight, and the petals fall off one by one. The Blue Jay birds and the squirrels act like comical acrobats as they sit on top of the heads trying to feast on the sunflower seeds before hard shells develop, sometimes doing somersaults as they fall off their perch. Finally the leaves wither and dry as the autumn cold weather starts. Remember "The Velveteen Rabbit"? After life's scrapes and bruises and having your fur rubbed off, you become real!!

I did some sketches last summer and recently took one out to develop into a painting but put it aside because I had to work on more demanding projects. When the Iraq War began I started this painting. It seemed emotionally and spiritually appropriate. As I prayed while painting, my usual custom, the watercolor turned into a worship "song" in colors and shapes about seasons in our lives and became a powerful experience for me. When I finished I remembered the oft-quoted scripture passage from Ecclesiastes chapter 3, "For everything there is a season...a time for war, and a time for peace." That said it all!!
