Use Paintings to Plan Decor Have you considered the value of original paintings to personalize your interior design? As an artist and former interior designer I have lots of ideas for decorating with paintings. The paintings in the illustrations below are originals I painted. When we plan interior decor most of the main selections we make, for example, paint, wall coverings, flooring, and furniture, can be duplicated easily or purchased ready made from decorating retail stores. An original painting is a one-of-a-kind part of your decorating scheme. Let's consider how to create your decor from an original painting.

Start with a fabric motif The design in a fabric such as the tapestry fabric below can be the start of an entire decorating plan. Look at the motif of your fabric, the colors and the proportions of each color. Then plan your room around these colors. Find a painting that has the main color of your room used enough that it blends well with the same color used in other parts of your room. In this example the upholstery fabric had the light background color of the walls and carpeting plus the greens of the plants. The dark red violet colors complemented the dark stains of the woods. Notice that the curving lines of the motif are also in the curve of the back of the sofa and the coffee table. The upholstery fabric did not arrive in time for the decorators' Show of Homes, but the fabric is shown in the pillows on the sofa.

Use colors from a painting Color chips provide handy references for matching colors from a painting with fabrics in bedspreads, pillows, wall and wood colors. The client loved the idea of using an abstract painting with linear elements in it to match the colors of the decor. To achieve all those lines in the painting pine branches were used as brushes! This is a 30" x 40" acrylic on canvas painting.

The theme in this young boy's bedroom was Noah's Ark based on a pair of wallpaper samples. The theme of the watercolor accessorized the room and coordinated well with the wall colors, carpet and wallpaper. The painting was painted with ink and watercolor on paper.

Select a painting to create a mood The large, light filled master suite had these fabrics in the bedspread and dust ruffle. The interior designer wanted paintings to soften the block design of one fabric and to provide a transition to the adjoining light filled dressing rooms. This semi-abstract ink and watercolor painting creates a peaceful atmosphere with a soft edged painting technique and the curved motifs of one of the fabrics.

Use your favorite collection This client collects sunflower paintings and had a specific location in mind for a pair of sunflower watercolors. The size and spatial directions of the flowers fit with the collector's preferences for displaying the art in an office setting.

Start with a poem, saying, or prayer To determine your theme and mood and personal statement for a room. This person grows sunflowers, writes poetry, and lives her life based on her Christian faith. A watercolor of a sunflower with her poetry printed in calligraphy said it all in one powerful focal point. Click on the image to view it in larger size.

SUNFLOWERS Reaching high Reaching for the Son's hands Reaching down to me Hold your head up my child Rise above the world Look towards me and grow Grow bright and beautiful Spread seeds of joy Brighten the earth with smiles A world heavy laden with sin Give them to me He cries Don't turn your heads toward the ground Soak in the warmth of my sunshine Be comforted by my everlasting light
