Start Small to Collect Art Small sized originals are excellent starters for collecting art. Gradually your confidence in choosing art increases as you relate to each colorful painting you purchase. Then you'll have the courage to buy larger pieces. I think there's a parallel between starting to collect art and starting to exhibit art as an artist. Ultimately, the displayed piece says, "I chose this" or "I created this." Those are scary thoughts at first because others have different tastes and usually aren't too hesitant to express their likes and dislikes. It took me years before I exhibited publicly my art or entered juried shows. I got over the conflicting opinions really quickly when I found my paintings juried in and juried out of shows, sometimes high quality paintings in well respected shows. It became a game for me. Once you hear art critics disagree you finally come to the point of choosing art you like and painting what and how you like to paint. Small paintings, small watercolors, small mixed media paintings are so easy to pop into a ready-made frame for a special gift for someone. Giving them as gifts gives you the opportunity to share something unique with someone else. Frame small, for example 3" x 5" mixed media paintings on paper or unframed watercolors, with a wide mat to create seemingly larger size paintings to make a big statement in interior decorating. Try grouping several small paintings to create a larger focus area on a wall. Picture framers' advertisements often show a picture of several small images each framed with a large mat width of 4 to 5" and all displayed together for a stunning wall decoration. The December 2001 issue of "Home Style" magazine, pp. 88-89, shows a large living room wall decorated with 16 framed small images with wide mats. What an easy way to start collecting art or adding a meaningful accent to your decorating! If you have ideas or suggestions for topics for this page, please e-mail me. |
